SANDER JAMES BREINER M.D.

Age 87, of Bloomfield, died August 28, 2012. �When all is said and done, the most important person in our universe is the mother who can pass along her love, nurturing, security, and stability to her daughters, who will continue the cycle and pass along these characteristics to her children. The perfection for motherhood begins in infancy. Without this foundation in the first two or three years of life, the little girl will become impaired in her functioning as a mother. This means that the most important person in the world is a newborn female child. What a horrible tragedy that she has been the object, throughout history, of society's prejudice and abuse. Without that love from mother we flounder; without it, there is pain, violence, death-even war. The only hope our civilization has lies in changing our response toward women. Born in Fiume, Italy of traveling U.S. parents, Sander moved to U.S. (Chicago) at 3 mos of age. He grew up in Chicago and during WWII, enlisted in the army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was hospitalized with frozen feet. He served out army time in Paris, arranging educational facilities for returning soldiers. After the War, Sander returned to U.S. He received the French Fouraguerre and the Belgian Fouraguerre. He recently was awarded the bronze star medal of valor. Dr. Breiner went to college at age 15 and then attended The Chicago Medical School and graduated as M.D. in 1953. He moved to Michigan and trained as a psychiatrist at Ypsilanti State Hospital. He has maintained a private practice as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Dr. Breiner is a distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a founding member of the Psychiatric Forum. During his entire career Dr. Breiner continued writing extensively on various aspects of psychiatry. He published several books including �Slaughter Of The Innocents�Child Abuse Through The Ages And Today� and over one hundred papers. His writings have covered many important subjects in the understanding of human brain function which have not previously been addressed or understood. He was eagerly sought for his lectures by academics and medics, and traveled to many parts of the world to present his papers. He received recognition from medical schools and associations. His recent positions included, Professor of Psychiatry-Michigan State University (College of Human Medicine/College of Osteopathic Medicine); Book/Article Reviewer Journal of Psycholohistory, Journal of School Health, Clio's Psyche, New England Journal of Medicine; Attending Staff Harper/Grace Hospitals; Oakland County Medical Society-Mediation and Ethics Committees; Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Wayne State University; Physician Reviewer-Physician's Review Organization of Michigan, Inc. and MPRO The Michigan Psychoanalytic Council: Certification in Psychonanalysis (Supervising & Training Analyst); Consulting Reader-Psychological Reports; NARTH-Member Scientific Advisory Committee; Distinguished Life Fellow American Psychiatrist Association; Member-American Acedemy of Forensic Psychiatry, College of Forensic Psychiatry, International Neuropsychoanalysis Society. A dedicated healer as a psychiatrist and physician, upon hearing of his own condition and immediately from his hospice bed, he had telephone consultations with each of his patients and then sent goodbye letters to each of them, signing each one personally. A life member of Hadassah, he also was a member of the Jewish Home and Aging Services Auxillary. As an avid gardener, art collector, lover of nature, music, and theatre, his home has always been a haven for friends and animals. He shared his love of nature and the arts with friends and family alike. His glass was "almost overflowing". He had a kind word for all and was a friend to everyone. Family Info: He was the son of the late Alfred and the late Margaret Breiner and the brother of the late Burton Breiner. Loving and adored husband of Beatrice (Oboler) for 61 years (since 1951.) Devoted father of Linda (Dr. Jesse) Cedarbaum, Myles (Rungnapa Jeenbuppa Breiner)Breiner and the late Robert (Debbie Glassford) Breiner. Proud grandfather of Zena Milstein, Noah Milstein, Jonah Breiner, Jules Breiner, Andrew (Molly Freidenshon) Breiner, Daniel Breiner. Also survived by his brother in law, Dr. Alan (Lynne Applebaum) Oboler, and their children, Dr. Lara (Louis Jaffe) and Joshua (Dianna) Oboler, and by many other loving relatives and friends.
