Esther Ryback Applebaum July 12, 1924-September 26, 2021 Our beloved mother Esther passed away in her Southfield home on the evening of September 26. Born in Detroit on 7/12/24 to Sol and Rose Ryback, Esther was the only daughter and the first of their 4 children, followed by her 3 brothers Bernard, Gordon, and Ralph which made up the rest of her family. As a teenager, she worked with her parents in the family store while attending first Central High School and then transferring to the High School of Commerce where she obtained a business education. Esther met Max Applebaum, her high school sweetheart, at the age of 16 and they were married after a long engagement when he returned from serving in the army during WWII on March 10, 1946. Together they raised four children and when they were old enough, Esther used her business skills to work in medical offices, and then for 20 years for Southfield Public Schools at Southfield Lathrup High School as Secretary in the attendance office until her retirement. She loved music and singing all her life and enjoyed performing with the Rose Morgan Choral Group. She was an avid photographer and loved to travel and see new places. She provided photos for her widespread family at many joyous events over the years. Esther was a lifetime member of Israel chapter B'nai B'rith which was chartered on her birthday, 7/12/48. She served as president several times as well as the Louis Marshall president when the chapters eventually merged. She also served on the B'nai B'rith Council of Metropolitan Detroit. She loved meeting new people and giving of her time and energy for worthy causes for those in need. She had a knack for making others feel good about themselves and welcome in any situation. She will always be remembered as a woman with boundless energy and a zest for life. Esther is survived by her daughters Marilyn Bennett and Janet Applebaum, her sons Steven Applebaum and Michael Applebaum, her brother Ralph Ryback and his wife Lucy and their families, sister-in-law Lakie Ryback and her family, nieces Sarah Lobel and Rifka Shaine and their families, niece Debbie Lebovic and husband Avraham and their family, nephews Avi and David Applebaum and their families, grandchildren Ian Bennett Brosdahl and her husband Peter, Rachel Applebaum, Sky Applebaum and his wife Julia, Zachary Applebaum, Joshua Applebaum, Noah Applebaum and his wife Ashley, and great-grandchildren Lillian, Sky Maxwell, Ryker, Conri and Harlow Applebaum. Also survived by other relatives and friends. OFFICIATING: Rabbi Aaron Starr Hazzan David Propis INTERMENT: Hebrew Memorial Park Cemetery SHIVA: The family will observe Shiva through the evening of Tuesday, October 5, at the residence: 25159 Ridgecliff Drive Southfield, MI 48075 Religious services will be held this evening, Thursday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. Friday morning Services at 7:30 a.m., and Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday religious services will be held by Zoom with Congregation Shaarey Zedek. That zoom link will be provided on the Shaarey Zedek Website for friends and family to join in.
