SAM BERMAN

May 1, 1931 - January 10, 2017

SERVICES: 12 NOON FRIDAY 1/13/2017 at HEBREW MEMORIAL CHAPEL A LINK WILL BE PROVIDED FOR A WEBCAST OF THE FUNERAL SERVICE. Age 85, of West Bloomfield, died January 10, 2017. Born in Kalushin, Poland, Sam is a Holocaust Survivor. In 1939 he went to Russia and then to Germany and France. He went to Israel only to be captured by the British and was sent to Cyprus. Finally in 1947, he was able to go to a kibbutz in Israel. He became an officer in the Israeli army, fought in the Sinai Campaign in 1956 and his brother, Alter died during the fight for independence in 1948. Sam was active with the IDF, Mogan David Adam, Holocaust Memorial Center, Sharit Ha-platah, Yeshiva Beth Yehuda, ZOA, B'nai B'rith, ORT and many other organizations. Beloved husband for 57 years to the late Minnie Berman. Devoted father of Shelly (Jody) Mendelson and Sy (Judy) Berman. Loving grandfather of Melissa, Arielle and Erica Mendelson, Aaron Berman and Leah Berman. Proud son of the late Ethel and the late Simon Berman. Dear brother of Sarah (David) Waldshan and the late Alter Berman. Cherished brother-in-law of Barry (Elaine) Margolis, Sara-Beth (Sidney) Wizen, Sharon (late Meyer) Margolis and the late Bernard (late Marlene) Margolis. Also survived by extended beloved family and friends including aunt, cousins and nieces and nephews.
