December 9, 1928 - December 13, 2016
SERVICES: 10:30 AM THURSDAY 12/15/2016 at HEBREW MEMORIAL CHAPEL A LINK WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR A WEBCAST OF THE FUNERAL SERVICE. Age 88, of Oak Park, died December 13, 2016. Born in Teltz, Lithuania, her father Itzhak was a chemist, and her mother, Shifra stayed at home. Because her great-grandfather was the Baal Shem Tov of Lithuania, the Jews tried to save Miriam. At first, the family lived in the countryside and Miriam was sent to be with her aunt. Later she returned to her mother. As German soldiers came to their yard, someone grabbed Miriam and her mother at the back door and they left. Their house was set ablaze with benzene; Miriam's little sister died in the fire. The Germans grabbed her father. Miriam and her mother traveled at night through places she does not remember, and later took a boat to join an aunt in Pittsburgh. Miriam met her loving husband by chance when he traveled with a friend and stopped in Pittsburgh on the way to New York. He didn't continue his trip after meeting Miriam. He said that it was all over for him at that moment. They were married after that one meeting and were married for over 55 years. Throughout her life, Miriam was involved with the Holocaust Memorial Center and CHAIM (Children of Holocaust Association in Michigan). Beloved wife for over 55 years to the late Morris Rubenstein. Devoted mother of Tzvi (Rochel) Rubenstein, Bernard (Lisa) Rubenstein, Sophia (Shmuel) Goodman, Toba Rubenstein, David (Julie Stulberg) Rubenstein, Celia "Sarah" (Yerachmiel) Shaw and Hannah (Barry) Novick.
