EDITH CIMMER

March 6, 1926 - October 20, 2017

SERVICES: 2:30 PM MONDAY 10/23/2017 at HEBREW MEMORIAL CHAPEL A LINK WILL BE PROVIDED FOR A WEBCAST OF THE FUNERAL SERVICE Age 91, of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Oak Park, Michigan, died October 20, 2017. Beloved wife for over 50 years to the late Albert Cimmer. Devoted mother of Goldie (Rejean) Tremblay, Shelly (Ron) Harwood and Jay Cimmer. Loving grandmother of Daniel (Fallon) Tremblay, Janna (Pat) McClanahan, Ben Harwood, Brittany Harwood and Alaena Cimmer. Proud great-grandmother of Regan Tremblay and Palmer McClanahan. Our “Bubby” was loved fiercely by her grand and great-grandchildren and was our hero and role model. As a girl, she witnessed her entire family murdered by Nazis, was interned at a coal mining work camp, and somehow escaped the ghettos and gestapo and survived the war in the barns and woods of Poland. She learned to speak Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Hebrew and Yiddish and used her intelligence and stubborn will to evade the fate of 98% of Polish Jews. She came to America as a young refugee with the clothes on her back, her infant daughter Goldie in her arms, born in an Austrian displaced persons camp, and her shell-shocked husband, who had won her over by buying her shoes. She taught herself English and how to sew, and helped to support her family one hem at a time in her Detroit attic with a foot-powered Singer. Through her difficult life, she had the resolve to keep making the best of things, to be defiant, and to kibbitz her way through most of it. Latke Pusher, Master of Rummy Cube, Yente-in-Chief, 4’10” of pure Chutzpah, Edith Cimmer, our Bubby, you were loved, we will never forget you. אני אוהבת אותך ותמיד תזכור אותך. תודה שהאהבה שלך התכוונה לעולם. An active participant with Shaarit Haplaytah, B'nai B'rith and the Holocaust Memorial Survival Group. She was generous to many charitable organizations.
